Henry Malone, the former Todd County Superintendent of Schools who was instrumental in the consolidation of the high school and taking the school system through a period of desegregation, died Friday in Clarksville. He was 97.
The Guthrie native served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and obtained his college degrees from Austin Peay and George Peabody College.
Malone served as principal of Guthrie High School from 1951-58 and was superintendent of the Todd County school district from 1958-65. After Trenton High School was absorbed by Todd County in 1957, Clifty and Guthrie were absorbed in 1963 with the school becoming Todd County Central.
In 1964 Todd County Training was absorbed through desegregation.
He joined the Austin Peay State University staff in 1965 and was the Director of Alumni Affairs for 15 years. For the remainder of his career, he served as Coordinator of Public Service in the College of Education.
After his retirement from education, he served as vice-chairman of the Todd County Housing Authority and served on the Todd County Board of Education for 15 years.
He was elected to the Todd County Schools Hall of Fame in 2019.
His wife, 93-year-old Jean Bland Malone, died on Monday.
Joint services for Henry Malone and his wife Jean will be Thursday at 1:00 at the Guthrie Baptist Church.
