The Green River Academy Board of Trustees has been hard at work this past year continuing the building’s restoration project.
At their meeting Thursday, Nov. 21, Board of Trustees President Matthew Bailey said the historic site has seen quite a bit of progress in 2024, with more research, restoration and outreach.
He notes the institute recently discovered some new historical finds in its research.
Additionally, the academy now has a new website, online store, three new committees and a new fence and sidewalk on campus.
The organization already has big plans for 2025, including applying for more grants. Bailey says Green River recently applied for the Kentucky Historical Society’s America250 grant, and if successful, plan to use the funds to open a tour of the building.
The organization also plans to hold two fundraising events, apply to be on the National Register and add sidelights on the building’s doors and windows.
Another future restoration initiative is the John E. Walton room – the Green River Academy is currently trying to raise $35,000 to restore the two-story hall to its former glory, complete with solid oak flooring and period furniture.
The organization offers its thanks to Novelis for their $5,000 contribution and invites the community to donate to the cause.
Donations can be mailed to the Green River Academy or submitted online at the academy’s website.
