After an over 40-year career in emergency services, Todd County Emergency Management Director Daniel Smith is hanging up his hat.

During Friday morning’s Todd County Fiscal Court meeting, Smith announced his retirement with a tentative January 1, 2025, effective date. In comments to Your WEKT News Edge, Smith said he has served in his current role since 2016.

As for career memories over the last eight years, Smith shared that tornado recovery efforts have come to mind over the last few years.

He leaves the position after securing funding to install nine new tornado sirens across the county.

As for the future, Smith said he is not planning to leave Todd County.

Judge-Executive Todd Mansfield told magistrates a search for his replacement is underway, with Smith potentially serving as a contractor in 2025 until a successor is found.
