Medical cannabis businesses are a big buzz in Kentucky, as many municipalities will vote in favor or against the sale of the plant on the November General Election ballot.
That includes voters in Todd County, while Guthrie City Council is still considering the businesses.
During a meeting of the Guthrie Planning Commission Tuesday afternoon, Community and Development Services’ Beth Richardson informed the group of proposed restrictions on the businesses within the city limits, if the council chooses to allow it.
State law says medical cannabis dispensaries can not be within a thousand feet of a school or daycare facility or within 40 feet of an existing residential zone and can only operate between the hours of 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM.
No cultivator or processor licenses will be issued in Todd County.
Richardson added the local proposed restrictions would be discussed in full during a public hearing held Tuesday evening, November 19th, at 6:00 at Guthrie City Hall.
January 1st is when medical cannabis sales can begin in Kentucky. To qualify for a medical cannabis card, the holder must have a qualifying medical condition, which includes any type or form of cancer regardless of stage; chronic, severe, or debilitating pain; epilepsy or any other intractable seizure disorder; multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms; chronic nausea or a vomiting syndrome that has proven resistant to other conventional medical treatments; and post-traumatic stress disorder.
A question on the November ballot will be asked to all Todd County voters about medical cannabis. If it doesn’t pass, the discussion in Guthrie would end.
