Time is running out for residents to honor their military heroes through the City of Guthrie’s Hometown Heroes Banner Project.
The deadline to submit an application to recognize active-duty service members, veterans, or those who made the ultimate sacrifice is Sunday.
This initiative provides a unique opportunity for the community to pay tribute to family members who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. Banners, measuring 18 inches by 36 inches and double-sided, will proudly display the honoree’s name and service.
The banners will be displayed from May 17, 2025 (Armed Forces Day) through Veterans Day (November 11, 2025) along Ewing, Cherry, and Third Streets in downtown Guthrie, as well as on Park Street from the railroad tracks to the Veterans Memorial Monument.
After their display period, the banners will be given to the nominating individual or family.
The cost per new banner, which includes production and bracket, is $80. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the City of Guthrie, with “Hometown Heroes Banner” noted in the memo. For those who participated in the 2024 program and wish to reuse their banner, the cost is $30.
To be eligible for a banner, honorees must be:
- Active duty, honorably discharged veterans, or those who died in the line of duty from any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, Coast Guard, Space Force, and Homeland Security).
- AND either a past or current Guthrie resident, consider Guthrie their hometown, or be a City of Guthrie employee.
- OR an immediate family member (parent, spouse, child, sibling, grandchild, child-in-law) of a Guthrie resident.
Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis by the Hometown Heroes Project Committee. Once verified and funded, the applicant will be notified of approval, and the banner will be created. Please note that applications for the 2025 year will close once 80 honorees are reached.
