Wanda Groves, 98, of Clifty

The Todd County Funeral Home is honored to have been called to serve the family of Ms. Wanda L. Groves.

Wanda L. Groves, age 98 of Clifty, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. She passed away at the Hearthstone Place Nursing and Rehab in Elkton.

She was born October 16, 1926 in a log house on her grandfather Groves farm in North Todd County, Kentucky.

She was the eldest of four daughters born to the late Charlie and Eva Turner Groves.

After graduating from Clifty High School in 1945, she attended Bowling Green College of Commerce. During that time, the United States Civil Service Commission set up recruitment booths on college campuses to fill Civil Service positions for the Armed Forces. She was accepted for a secretarial position with the U.S. Military and moved to Arlington, Virginia where she received further training and education at the George Washington University in Washington, DC.

During her 47-year tenor, she received many promotions, awards and commendations. In later years, she was afforded the privilege of traveling all over the country meeting and shaking hands with U.S. Presidents and other dignitaries. At retirement, she held the position of Assistant Head of the Decorations, Medals and Awards Division for the U.S. Marine Corp. Periodically, she assumed the role as the “Head between the Heads” as the new Division Mangers were assigned.

She retired in 1984 and returned to Clifty, Kentucky to help care for her aging parents.

Wanda was a member of Clifty Christian Church where she served as Secretary/Treasurer for over 25 years. She enjoyed reading the Bible, Amish fiction and mystery books, gardening, genealogy, donating to worthy causes and watching Kentucky Basketball.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Nona Phillips and Charlene Slaughter Joines.

She is survived by a sister, Maulta Blake of Elkton; a cousin, Jim Turner and wife, Kaye of Greenville; eleven nieces and nephews; two step nephews; nineteen great nieces and nephews; forty-five great great nieces and nephews and several great, great, great nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, October 26th from 5:00 until 7:00 and again on Sunday, October 27th from 12:00 until 2:00 at the Todd County Funeral Home in Elkton. Funeral service is scheduled to be conducted on Sunday, October 27th at 2:00 in the Rose Chapel of the Todd County Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Miller officiating. Interment will follow at the Clifty Christian Church Cemetery in Clifty.
