Nearly a month after being named in a civil lawsuit filed in Trigg Circuit Court on June 12, Trenton City Commissioners voted to hire an attorney.
In its regularly scheduled meeting Monday evening, city commissioners unanimously agreed to hire the Lexington, KY firm of Sturgill, Turner, Barker, and Maloney to represent the city in the suit.
The suit, filed by Trigg landowner Joe Wright against the Pennyrile Regional Energy Agency and the cities of Guthrie and Trenton asserts that PREA has no right to take Wright’s 348 acres on Old Hopkinsville Road by eminent domain and that the 16-inch gas that will be constructed as part of the 53-mile natural gas pipeline is not necessary to meet the demands of the residents of Trenton and Guthrie.
The lawsuit represents only one side of the issue.
Plans for a new parking lot at Trenton Baptist Church call for the closure of the 6th Street entrance to the parking lot and the creation of a new entrance and street, directly across the street from the existing 7th Street.
The new 24-foot street will allow residents behind the church continued access to Cedar Street and will create more parking spaces for the church.
Church member Benn Stahl told the commission that the church aims for the betterment of not only the church but the community.
Commissioners will likely vote on the closure at its August meeting.
