Elkton’s July 3 Celebration Fast Approaching

Prepare to see a massive display of fireworks over the historic Elkton Square next Wednesday for the city’s annual July 3 celebration.

Sponsored by BR Knuckles Insurance Agency, the free event will feature a children’s bike parade, food vendors, live music and a huge fireworks show for the grand finale.

Johnny Knuckles of BR Knuckles Insurance says the event will begin with the bike parade, presented by the Todd County Chamber of Commerce, at 5:30 p.m. The parade will begin in the Elkton Baptist Church parking lot, making its way around the square before ending back at the church. Elkton Baptist is also supplying bounce houses on the lawn behind the Milliken Memorial Community House.

Food vendors from around 18 different food trucks will begin serving food at 6 p.m. with live music, sponsored by the Todd County Foundation, to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Knuckles says this year’s concert is by Nashville-based Lydia Simonds, a former American Idol constestant.

The fireworks show will begin at dark, typically around 9 p.m. depending on the weather.

Knuckles says his group buys and sets off the fireworks themselves each year. He adds they’ve been putting on this event for almost 20 years now and it continues to grow every year – in fact, this year’s show will be 25 minutes and have more fireworks than ever before.

To Knuckles, it’s a way to give back to the area.

Elkton Square will be closed off to traffic early in the afternoon and continuing throughout the duration of the event. The community is encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets and find a spot to enjoy music, food, fellowship and fireworks.

WEKT will provide a live broadcast on the square from 1-5 p.m. Tune in for coverage Wednesday, July 3 on 1070 AM, 92.1 FM or wektradio.com.
