Carol Jean Jones Kirkman is a 1970 graduate of Todd County Central High School.
Kirkman says her years at Todd Central were very valuable, specifically the caring teachers, her many friends and of course, the academics. She will always treasure the memory of the school’s small size, such that she not only knew everyone in her class, but everyone at the school.
She remembers most about her time in high school how the whole student body and staff were so supportive of extracurricular activities. Kirkman believes wholeheartedly this is where the connection between extracurricular activities and academics was born and laments today’s extracurriculars are lacking in attendance.
She advises current Todd Central students to participate in something, from clubs to bands, arts and sports. She adds it’s important to get involved – students could even participate as a spectator.
Kirkman has the same advice for current educators. She adds their students will see they care and she would be willing to venture students would be more involved in their classes.
After graduating, she attended Austin Peay State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s in curriculum and instruction and another master’s in supervision. To Kirkman, her most significant role has been her career as a middle school math teacher.
Kirkman was born in Hendersonville, Tennessee and now lives in Elkton, Kentucky. She has three children, Pam Kirkman Phillips, Randal Kirkman and Brad Kirkman.
