Members of the Elkton Rotary Club had the chance to tour the Todd County Detention Center Wednesday afternoon.

The tour was led by Jailer Jeff Penick and Chief Deputy Amber Conyea and offered the chance for various community members and leaders to learn more about the facility at 201 E. McReynolds Drive.

As of Wednesday, the jail had 125 inmates – 105 of whom are there on state charges. The facility was constructed in 2007 and was built to only house male inmates. It features 137 beds.

Among the many things inmates can do while incarcerated, Penick shared they can now take their GED Test at the jail. Inmates also participate in various community work projects, like helping out at the Todd County Senior Citizens Center and clearing trash off the sides of roadways.

Several inmates also participate in a weekly bible class each Wednesday night, and seven inmates were baptized while the Rotary Club was touring the facility.

Moving forward, Penick said they are continuing to upgrade cyber security within the facility and working to re-launch their website, where community members can see current inmates.
